This year, our beloved Dickinson Park turns 100 years old!
What began in 1915 as a bramble-filled lot donated to the Village Improvement Association (VIA), has since become the centerpiece of our small town. For a century, this beautiful space has served as our community’s gathering place. In the early years, one would find musical performances, community picnics, and beautiful gardens. More recently, the park hosts city sponsored events like Movies in the Park and a Farmers Market. The park also provides a delightful space for watching local parades and an occasional wedding under the gazebo. On Saturday April 29th, 2017 from 9am – 2pm our city will have a new reason to gather in this special place.
In partnership with the Orange City Historic Preservation Board, the VIA Orange City Woman’s Club will host Art in the Park. The focus of this event will be a Plein Air Paint Out. This open-air painting is where a painter reproduces the actual visual conditions seen at the time of the painting. Artists will bring their own materials to create scenes of Dickinson Park and other historic landmarks of Orange City. Our goal is to highlight artists from all over Volusia County within a broad spectrum of media and to promote awareness of art. In doing so, we seek artists who will create wonderful works of art depicting our quaint little park in honor of its 100th year serving our community. And of course, we cannot have a birthday party unless there will be cake!
To provide additional interest in our event, the VIA Club is seeking local artists who want to display and sell their work. Only original works of art and hand-crafted items will be accepted for display and sale. Prints of exhibiting artist’s work may be sold. They are seeking sponsors for a kid’s painting area so families may also participate in the event. They are also looking for local musicians who would be willing to perform during the event. If you have an interest in participating this event, please contact the VIA at 407-832-9426 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
